Portaits of Sudan : On a recent trip to Sudan, I was able live among the Dinkas. We slept in their huts, and ate their food. I had a portable printer with me, and was able to take these portraits and give them their first ever photographs of themselves. It was a big hit.

HEY HON : Baltimore is a tale of two cities. There is the flashy Inner Harbor , and then there is Balmer as the local say. It's a city of neighborhoods, rich in culture portrayed by Barry Levinson in Diner and Avalon and John Waters in Hairspray. It's a culture of locals from Dundalk, Fells Point,Canton,and of course, Hampden- Hon Central. There are real streets, with real stores, no strip malls here Hon. During the Hon Fest , young Hons are in disguise, older ones on display. It's a celebration of all things Hon, and is like wandering into a Fellini movie and a Diane Arbus exhibit...

El Salvador : El Salvador, once a political hot spot in Central America, is the survivor of a brutal civil war that killed over 75,000 of its citizens. El Salvador is now at peace, but on the world's stage, quite forgotten. However, what has been achieved by the cease fire in 1992 is utterly remarkable - lasting peace and a functioning democracy. Although the war is over, the poverty remains. The average annual income in El Salvador is less than $800/year. Many Salvadorans live by subsistence farming, and over 1,000,000 people were displaced by the earthquake in 2001. Many of them now live in refuge camps, in 10'x15' shelters made of corrugated steel with no running water. These camps are truly abysmal.
Despite their poverty, Salvadorans are wonderful people; quick with a smile, warm, and very enthusiastic about anything American.

A personal remembrance

In 1979 at 24 years old, I had come to a tipping point in my life. An injury ended my career as a bicycle racer and my oldest brother Mike, had tragically died. I turned to my other brother John who was playing with a new band called the Neighborhoods who said I should come out to Boston and visit. A few days turned into 18 months as I quickly became part of the Neighborhoods family. I worked as a roadie with Og and Chuck and became immersed in the life of Hoods Mania.

We were just kids- living in a big house with no adult supervision. No one to say, Hey, that might be dangerous or Are you sure you want to do that?. The lighter fluid and vacuum cleaner incident with Og comes to mind.

The cast of characters swirling around the band were ultimately inspiring (Rick Harte), wonderful, (Marriette), maddening,( Joe bag o donuts) and hysterical (Suzi Rickshaw).

We did hundreds of shows, often working four to five nights a week and in May of 1979 we did almost 30 shows. Clearly the most influential Boston band of that era, the Hoods set a bench-mark for professionalism, stage show and music. Their stage show projected power, style and a frantic lyrical quality that was as much as an athletic event as it was rock-n-roll. There was nothing subtle about it- they were strictly the frontal assault method, as they would launch into No Place Like Home and without stopping, propel into Think it Over, Monday Morning, and One Day Older. They would have the crowd pogoing and shouting, Life s no fun- and So sad but truuuuue! at the top of their lungs. Shows would end with both audience and band soaked in sweat, wrung out and exhausted. Every night. Every show. Two hundred times a year.

Unbelievable.

When Aerosmith members Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer inducted David Minehan, John Hartcorn and Mike Quaglia and Lee Harrington into the Boston Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame it merely confirmed what I had known for years- those guys had always been in my Hall of Fame. My time with them taught me that talent combined with hard work can equal success. It gave me the courage and confidence to pursue my own dreams.

Congratulations guys, you deserve this honor.
